Bit of a Mix

Hello, Its been a busy few weeks with me doing more photography sessions at the Cavell Hospital, some studio portraits, Showjumping at the College of West Anglia and the Mission 4x4 event in Essex. Fenland Visual Arts Collective also had their AGM and for my sins am once again Chair. Sunday saw me at Truckfest at the East of England Showground which was fun but cold!!!

Hope you enjoy the pics and I will try and post again next week after I have done my print on site for a ball on Friday in Wisbech and then to the Newark and Notts County Show at the weekend. Oh and I should take some time out on Thursday to Vote and then have a haircut!!! I do wonder which of those is the most important????

Wisbech

I have been working on some images for Wisbech town guide as well as lots of other projects over the last few weeks so have decided to post a few of those which may show Wisbech from a new angle. Today has been a mix of working on some images for a new exhibition in June as well as starting to get the garden sorted( not my favourite activity) as well as working on some new mixed media artwork all of which I will post in the comming weeks.

I have also decided to spend at least one day a week working on personal projects which I hope will bring a new body of work and an expansion of creativity in all aspects of my life. With the very busy period of spring/summer months comming up I hope to have lots of new images to post both here and facebook and of course website so keep checking them when you have some time.

Feel free to chase me up if I get lazy and dont post often enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

College of West Anglia Equine Centre

Today I again did some print on site photography at the College of West Anglia Equine Centre. Here are three of some of the falls that take place whenver showjumping takes place.
There were no serious injuries and it was only the riders pride that was bruised. All three got back on and rode making sure they then jumped a fence before leaving the arena.

It was a lovely sunny but cold day so lots of coffee was needed as I stood in the arena. They are a great bunch of riders always encouraged and supported by staff and helpers.

The next event I will be covering will be dressage in a few weeks time so unlikely to have these sort of spills then.

My daughter Sarah did the printing and selling for me even though I think she was feeling the worse for wear after Carleys birthday party last night so thanks to Sarah for her help and also to Marian for putting some of the images on my website so that more sales can be made.

My landrover Discovery ( well I think its mine as Sarah always seems to have a reason to "borrow" it ) had a dog guard fitted yesterday which turned into a 3 hour job to get the fixings correct. Thanks to Chris at Fenlandrover for his skill and patience.

Sarah said I hadnt posted for a while

Yes I havnt posted for a while as I was reminded by my daughter this morning so thought I had better do so!! I also decided to post a picture of her above.Well its been busy both with work and commitments to some of the organisations I belong too. There has also been an addition to the family in the form of a Land Rover Discovery bought in theorey to tow my granddaughers horsebox. I say in theory as my daughter has managed to "borrow" it a lot and I know she hasnt been towing with it. She has named the Discovery "roxy" so look out for news of her adventures. I just hope she doesnt need to use the winch on the front or the snorkel for driving through deep water!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I, in the meantime, have been offering my framed prints for sale at Lakenheath air base, photographing equine events mainly at the College of West Anglia Equine Centre and last evening set up my mini studio for the Mayor of Chatteris charity ball. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and many bought pictures of themselves dressed in their finery. I have also started another photography course for patients aand staff at Cavel Hospital P/boro and a junior photographic club based in March. Oh and photographed a piece of equipment for a company at 8:30am so that the images could go straight off to the printer for brochures not my best time of the day but then work is work whatever time it needs to be done.

I will endevour to post more regularly especially if Sarah reminds me lol

Flashing

No not the dirty mac type but the studio flash I use. I use Bowens flash both in the studio and when needed at "print on site" and when doing promotional images for organisations. Unfortunatly the large studio ones have developed a fault so are off being repaired and I hope to collect them this week. The smaller, in size and power, were used for my two studio shoots last week and were really great the only down side is not all my light modifiers fit the smaller units but I am gradually getting ones to fit.

I have been working on a number of illustrated articles for magazines and here are two images from one on trees.

Good news on the Cavelle Centre sessions I mentioned last time in that they have booked me for another four sessions starting this week. The wedding bookings are starting to come in again as are the Balls and Proms. My new sign has also arrived for the studio and am just waiting for suitable weather to put it up, and of course a couple of people to help me as its 8ft long and 3ft wide.

Finally congrats to Marian Savill on her acceptance in a number of exhibitions both in the UK and the USA.

Another appology

Yes its been months since I posted last and I really dont know how time has flown. The "print on site" facility has been popular, I done charity balls, lots of equestrian events and even photographed children meeting santa, this was on Christmas eve so he had to rush off to deliver all the other presents as part of his day job!!!!!!!. I was asked to start a junior photographic club and held the first get together which was fun. Between Christmas and New year I hosted an artist fun day at my studio for members of Fenvac and their families, It was great to see the children trying out all sorts of art. The course I ran for Arts & Minds at the Cavell Centre which is a hospital for those with mental health issues, has now finished. It seems to have been popular so may well be doing another one later in the year.

Sorry its been so long

Hi

Sorry its been so long since I posted last but time seems to have disapeared so fast this year. Having done a couple of joint exhibitions, an open studio event and covered some varied events including BMF Tail end which was great as was CLA Game Fair.

I have purchased equipment for "on site" printing so people can buy the mounted prints on the day so will be covering Proms and Black tie events as well as Equestrian Shows. My daughter staffed the printer and did the sales for me at our first proper event which was showjumping at Forest Edge Equestrian Centre in Norfolk. She did great so a big thanks to her.

Oh nearly forgot we have also had the launch of the charity calendar I shot and the local paper gave us the front cover and page 3 (approropraite I guess given the subject matter lol )

I promise ( yes I know I have promised before) to regularly update this blog so bear with me.

Music and Dance Wisbech

Wisbech is holding a Music and dance festival tomorrow and sunday where Fenvac has an art exhibition in support of their event. Marian, Heather and myself have spent today setting up the display boards and hanging the work. We will be staffing the exhibition for the two days and I will be photographing the event for the council.

Here are some of the images I have hanging, some of which are "straight" and some altered in photoshop.

A number of the instruments I photographed are very old and are part of the Chatteris Museum Collection so thanks to them for the loan.

I have included a number of ballet shoe shots in the exhibition and a thanks to Lou for getting them for me

This final image is not in the exhibition but was uploaded by mistake and has nothing to do with music and dance but as I dont Know how to remove it I will leave it here lol

Journeys Exhibition

The joint exhibition I am holding with Marian entitled "Journeys" is currently running at March Library. Thanks to all of you who attended the " meet the artist" evening on tuesday. Some of you who live further afield have ask that I post some of the other images on which I have added some of my prose. This is something I have been thinking of doing for a while and after seeing the photographic work done by by niece Holly for her coursework I decided to do my own version and this exhibition seemed the ideal time to do it. Thanks to all of you who have been touched in some way by my words.

Holly was with me when I took some of the images and it was great to hear her critique of my work.

The images here were taken as far afield as Neath, Mumbles, Tenby,and Fenland.

Journeys

Monday sees the start of my next joint exhibition entitled "Journeys" with Marian. This exhibition is representative of my journey through life with a first for me, this is the addition of some prose to some of my images. I have written some prose for years and untill now I havent felt happy to add them to the images. The "preview" or "meet the artist" evening is Tuesday from 6:30-8:30. Everyone is welcome at March library for this evening and the exhibition will run for two weeks.

Music and Dance Exhibition

I have been working on some images for an exhibtion with the theme of music and dance. This will be a Fenvac exhibition supporting Wisbech Councils Music and dance Festival on 1st and 2nd August. I havnt finally decided which images to use but here are two on my shortlist

The first is a ballet shoe that has the ribbons being blown by a fan, and the second is an American made banjo with has has a liquify effect and a few other things done to it.

Busy Time

Its been a busy few weeks with the finishing of my joint exhibition with Marian and then this last weekend Fenvac has put on an exhibition of its members work. This was part of the towns Medieval Festival. Five of us put on workshops with Marian and Kath doing one on Art Journaling and mine being on Portrait Photography. With this over I have to get busy on my next exhibition with Marian entitled "Journeys" and overlapping that we are putting an exhibition of art based on music and dance as part of a nearby towns festival. Also managed to visit a reclamation yard to take some photos, a few of which I have posted here.

I love to see "found shapes" and photograph them and reclamation yards although at first glance look like things have just been dumped it is when you look closely you can see a sort of oder and lovely shapes and textures as well as interesting signs. Hope you enjoy the images

Twenty Five Yards

A couple of different pics to the ones I usually post and they were taken on the morning of Race for Life. The title refers to how far I had to walk from one picture to the next, I like the contrasts between the lovely river scene and the empty bottles left by some street life people. It also shows that we have to be always on the look out for images that appeal to us and often dont have to go far to get totally different shots. I find that if I go out with only certain shots I want in mind then I can easily miss what else is around. Its always best to have an open mind about what you will photograph but thats often easier said than done.

Anyway hope you enjoy the images.

Exhibition starts tomorrow

Well its that time again. The next in the series of joint exhibitions starts tommorrow with a "meet the artists" evening on tuesday. I have a number of pieces not seen before so hope they are appreciated, the theme is "Fathers Day" with the aim this time of the work appealing to men, whether fathers, or grandfathers or even great grandfathers!!! It seems much harder to work on pieces that are suitable for men and am not sure why?, maybe its because generally the women decide on the decor in the home. If anyone wants to let me know why its more difficult then I would love to hear, in the mean time here are two of the new images that will be in the exhibition.

Shoes and bags

Today saw the sun shining and it felt the hotest day of the year so far. I had picked up some new shoes and a bag from Shoe Biz yesterday so spent part of today in the cool of my studio. Having four shoots this comming week I wanted to continue with the project today so that I can get the shoes back when the shop reopens on tuesday. Hope you like these two of the many I shot.

Gerorge Clare Surgery Chatteris

Tuesday saw myself with two members of Fenvac at the George Clare Surgery in Chatteris to meet with Barbara Green the Practice Manager to get a publicity photo for the local press. The partners through Barbara have kindly invited Fenvac members to hang art work throughout the building giving us the opportunity to reach a wider audience with our art. Four member currently have work displayed, Marian, Heather, Richard and myself. The work will change on a regular basis so all members will have an opportunity to show their work.

Yesterday saw six Fenvac members at RAF Wyton at a special day where we were able to show the art we produce and to chat with staff from the base. It was a great day with lots of interest shown in our work. A big thanks for their invite and hospitality

BMF

Hi, I was at the BMF event over the weekend which is always great fun and brings motorcyclists from all over the world to what is probably one of the biggest events of its kind in Europe. This image is from a series done on The Purple Helmets a fun display team who entertained us all. Also there was a local carting club from Wisbech who also helped raise money for Eddie Kidd the stunt roder who broke his neck some time ago. Some of the images have gone to the Motorcycle News for a spread in this weeks publication and hopefully Fenland Citizen will also do a spread on their local club.

Cavell Centre

The Cavell Centre is based in Peterborough and is for people with mental health difficulties. Having been approached by a representative from Arts & Minds, Marian, Ric and myself were invited to submit work to be displayed in this new centre. After a selection procedure all three of us had work accepted. This one one of my images that was selected and will soon be displayed for up to a year.

Its always nice to have worked judged by a panel of people and know that the work, as well as being decorative will be used by the staff to elicite memories and feelings from those being treated at the centre.

Shoes, bags and BBQ

I have been asked to post some more images from my recent shoes and bags shoot so here are three more which are quite different from the others I have shown. With the "wedding season" well and truelly underway I thought these would be appropriate.

Recently I have found bags much harder to shoot for some reason so I tried to put more time into it and am pleased with these results.

Yesterday saw me showing the final images for the calendar to all those that took part. I am pleased that everyone really liked their picture. The calendar will run for 18 months so trying to please 18 people was a bit nerve racking. Ric and Kath at the Honest John who chose me to do the images put on a lovely BBQ for all the people involved and their families. Thanks to them for a lovely evening,

Art Day and Wales

Hope you all enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend here in the UK. I am at Truckfest on sunday and monday and sunday evening I am photographing the group shot for the charity calendar (this time they will be all clothed) Spent some time in Wales the other week and had a great time going out with my niece for a days photography at Mumbles, I have also hosted an art day at my studio this previous sunday and took some shots of open toed boots. So much has happened over the last month or so that it would be silly to try and catch up so will just post some pictures from my ongoing shoe and bag project. Charity Calendar

Wow what a busy few weeks it has been. The Mothers day exhibition will finish this saturday and the next planned one is for Fathers day.

The charity calendar is going well and by the middle of next week I will have shot all 18 of the people taking part!. They have all been great and happy to try poses that I have suggested as well as suggesting their own. The props that they have brought to cover the "vital bits" have been equally varied from a piece of turf cut in a heart shape (can you guess what month that will be?) to Horus the Egyptian god to an ironing board and just about everything inbetween.

I have had my first batch of postcards printed to promote my wedding business and have decided to do a promotion on my pet portraits to give 10% of orders from my dog portraits to the local "pat dogs" organsation The picture of rosie in the daffodils will be the front of that card.

I am also continuing my longterm shoe project and here is one of my latest shots

Hello again

First can I say "hope you get well soon" to Marian who has snapped an achillies tendon playing badminton last evening. We have a joint exhibition leading up to Mothering Sunday which starts with a preview evening this comming Friday from 5pm-7pm at Chatteris Library. All are welcome

More of the Madaos Images

In my last post a showed some of the images from a recent shoot I did for Madaos. Since then I have started on a series of images for a charity calendar. The first shoot was last night and the next is this evening. They are all customers of a local pub called The Honest John and the mony rased will go to the charity that decorates the town with Christmas Lights.

I will not post them on here untill the images have been selected but this image was taken from the Madaos shoot and is not a composite he really does jump that high!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Copacabana

This last week has seen me shooting promotional and publicity images for a show to take place later in the year. The show is Copacabana and all the cast and crew were a joy to work with. Here are two of the approx 188 images that were selected. The society which is MADAOS put on two shows a year with this being the first of 2009. I have lots of shoots over the comming weeks including some for a Calendar to raise funds for a local charity. I will post more from these shoots as they are done.

Horses

Last night we had a thick layer of snow so my daughter asked if I coud photograph some of the beautiful black horses she works with. These are used to pull wedding and funeral carriages for a local company who I am told do "four in hand" which is unusal. I wont put the unmanipulated ones up untill the owners have seen them but here are two images that have been through minor work in photoshop, I do hope you find them interesting

New exhibitions

With the current exhibiion going so well myself and Marian are planning both joint and solo exhibitions for the next year. Booking venues that are suitable is always difficult and although many will be based locally we are also looking further afield.

I like the idea of strict deadlines as it focuses me in a way that gets lots done in a short time. Some people ask if that makes the work less artistic but to me it doesnt, I dont think the amount of time spent on a piece necessarily makes it better. Art in all its forms is the artist conveying their emotions in their chosen media. Some work can take minuites others can take years. I dont think you can value any art on time taken.

I hope to have a good proportion of new work for each exhibition and some will be all new work on a set theme. In the meantime here is some of my images to break up all the words. I hope you enjoy the blog and find inspiration in everything you see and do.

Valentines Exhibition

The preview evening was great and even though there is a slight "down" feeling afterwards we went to Rics pub the Honest John for a meal and a drink. Thanks to everyone That came and those that have visited the exhibition since. Marian mage a great job of the hanging and we are already talking about our next joint exhibition.

Exhibition Preview

The preview for our joint exhbition went well with both of us making sales,with two weeks to go its would be nice to hope that many more will sell. The two newspapers that publish in this are were king enough to publish the details and put in examples of our work so thank you to them, they are Cams Times and Fenland Citizen.

The day before Exhibition Prieview

Its Thursday and Marian and I are making last minute arrangements for the preview evening which is tomorrow evening from 5pm-7pm. Marian will hang the exhibition in the morning and then hopefully many friends will join us for nibbles and drinks.

Ehibition starts on Friday

The joint exhibition I am having with Marian starts with a preview evening at Chatteris Library this comming friday from 5pm untill 7pm. As usual we are both in a panic both if we have enough work that is good enough and that people will turn up and even buy!!.

There are so many last minuite things to do and due to my work commitments Marian will shoulder most of these.

The two images I have posted do not form part of the exhibition but are from my ongoing project on shoes. I hope to have about 30 finished pieces which will include handbags by March.

This week has seen me both at lots of meetings and Friday evening I photographed performances by local bands and musicians at March Town Hall. Called Fenland Jam I hope to have some of the images on my website before the end of the week.

Yesterday saw a small but dedicated group of Fenvac members vist Chatteris museum to draw paint or photograph some of their exhibits. We also chatted about visiting all five museums in the group and putting on an exhibition of the work done during these visits. A big thanks to Jenny for organising it and being there to join in the art.

Sunday Morning

Well its Sunday morning again and I am thinking back to how much work I have done this week. The main focus has been on some textured acrylic on canvas. These are part of work for the joint Valentines exhibition which starts on the 30th Jan and lasts untill 14th Feb. There is going to be a preview evening on the 30th from 5pm-7pm.

The exhibition is going to be entitled " The Art of Love " and although I will be exhibiting some acryclis the main work will be my photographic images. The really hard part of selecting work for the exhibition is deciding on work that will appeal to women to buy for their man. I think it is generally much easier to buy gifts for women.

Ellie has been press ganged into designing the posters and flyers to promote the exhibition so the comming weeks will see us trying to get these posters into as many places as possible as well as targeting local media.

Wednesday saw me at a meeting to help organise the towns main event which will be a Medeaval Festival taking place in the summer with lots of local groups taking place. This will include Fenvac which is Fenland Visual Art Collective. I chair this wonderful art organisation and on Friday we had a committee meeting at my home to discuss plans for events over the comming months. Next saturday we are having an "art" day at Chatteris Museum where members can go and paint, draw photograph etc. Jenny who is also on the committee of Fenvac is one of the main people responsible for the museum so she will get out pieces from storage as well which will be great.

I have put a couple of images which I hope you like The one on the left was taken in New York and is the type of more reportage work I like to do. This is a homeless lady who spends her time around the financial district where all the big banks are located.

Sunday

Well its Sunday and having had a busy day in the garden, defragging my photo computer and finishing off some mixed media pieces I thought I would keep to my new year resolution and post to the blog. I have finished six pieces for the upcomming Valentines Day exhibition which will be taking place at Chatteris Library in the East of England. These mixed media pieces are art I would not normally do but thought it may be something new to add to my photographic work.

Marian with whom I am exhibiting is also working hard even though she took her daughter Ellie, another talented artist, to see the Mighty Boosh over the weekend. Ellie had tooth ache I think so hope she was able to enjoy the show!!!!!!!!

Being winter the weather is cold but even worse is the short days. I feel much more energetic and creative when the weather is nice and the daylight hours are longer. I dont think I suffer from S.A.D. but may just add it to my list of ailments when I just want to stay curled up in my warm bed and dont fancy facing the cold to take pictures.

Valentines Exhibition

This week I have started working on a series of work ready for an exhibition leading up to Valentines day. The exhibition and smaller displays in various shops will be a joint project with the talented Maz. With a number of venues at the same time it will need a large body of new work . I am even going to do some mixed media work as well as photographic images to show.

As with all atrists in whatever media they use, promotion is the key to becoming known and then selling the work. The financial retraints on everyone is starting to show but I still think art is worth the cost as it can give pleasure for a lifetime.

I will show some of the work here over the next few weeks as well as on my etsy shop, please comment and pass my blog around to anyone you know, I am always happy to hear your views

Happy New Year

Hi All and a very Happy and Creative New Year .

As usual at this time we make resoutions that we are sure we will keep, only to let them go by the board after just a few days or weeks. I am convinced that 2009 will be a special year for me and so with that thought in mind I have been looking at my work, both what I do and how I do it. Conclusion is that I have to be more focused (good idea for a photographer ) with set plans and deadlines. Also that I have to promote myself more and learn how to "close the deal" with prospectve clients. Arrangements for solo and joint exhibitions have either been confirmed or will be soon with dates planned throughout 2009. I will be continuing with my personal projects of musical instruments as well as one on shoes and will use different frames apart from the standard black ones I use now.

For my studio portraiture I am shortly to start a series of makeover evenings for groups of ladies and even talking with someone about a calendar for next year!!!!!.

I also promise to post a least once a week as I have been very lax about that too.

Sorry for being so lax in posting lately its been a busy time. The open studios went well even though it was very cold on the saturday and rained all day sunday. I started a new project on musical instruments but those that voted for shoes dont worry I will be starting that very soon.

This first one is a trombone detail which has been altered slightly in photoshop and then cropped.

This violin is the next image which again has had slight modifcation in photoshop, this is one of two versions I had printed and framed for sale. Below is the second one which I prefer but most seem to like the one above best.

Unfortunatly it doesnt look so good when uploaded here but it will give an idea of how it looks.

Graffiti Wall

Its just over a week before Fenvac the regional art organisation is holding an Open Sudios Event to coincide with the town switching on its Christmas Lights. Mine is one of three venues where members will be able to show their work and chat with visitors, not to mention also sell lots of art!!!!!. Over the last few months I have been insulating and having fitted better heating in my studio to make it more pleasant during winter. This part of the work is now complete and as well as having background rolls of paper I have had a local young artist Ellie to graffitti one of my walls in a way thats suitable to use as a backdrop. The picture shows her working away and achieving exactly what i wanted in that there are no harsh lines to detract from portraits.

I have already used it for a portrait commission where the younger members of that family loved being able to have their photos taken against such a wacky wall. Thanks Ellie for doing such a great job as I am sure it will be a unique selling point for the area.

I will still accept votes for my next project as I will not be starting it untill the weekend with shoes winning by a little toe at the moment over musical instruments.

I will post some of the new project images after the weekend for you co comment on.

Ongoing Projects

The voting on my last post shows that shoes are in the lead at the moment but I would really like a lot more of the visitors to vote for their chooice. I always have some long term projects on the go and although I do not do a lot of manipulation on photoshop my pink series does involve more than usual for me. This series "does what it says on the tin" so everything is is based on the colour pink. I will continue with it over the next year or so and see what I end up with. I only use Nikon cameras and lenses but just for their quality and durablity as I am not a gadget freak. I have bought things in the past because they seemed like a good idea at the time but then found that I never used them, so now I think very carefully before I buy any camera gear. I hope you like this pink image

Open Studios

Well first of all thanks to everyone who has visited and especially those who left a comment. Today my office/study was finally finished after being redecorated and with my photo computer back in place its has freed up my dining table. Is anyone like me in that they hate to have clutter as it seems to block my thought and enthusiasm to produce new work. Talking of new work Fenvac which is a local art cooperative is holding an open studios event to coincide with the switching on of the towns Christmas lights. Mine is one of three studios opening to the public on 29th and 30 November with each studio having at least three artists work on show. I am lucky to have Marian and Ellie exhibiting their work with mine.

I am determined to have new work to show and will need to decide which of the numerous ideas I have in my head will get to be shown at this event. Maybe this is where you can help? If I give three of my subjects then you can vote as to which I do for open studios?

Hello and welcome to my first blog post. My name is Rob, I am a photographer with a website at http://www.photographybyrobmorris.com/
Because I shoot weddings, portraits, animals, events, and just about anything that stands still long enough ( oh I shoot moving things too so that doesnt count!!!!!) I could be called a jack of all trades and master of none. I dont feel that though, I feel it is the variety of work that keeps me fresh. With lots of artistic friends like Marian, Ellie, Steve etc etc I am able to to get inspiration from lots of sources.

I hope to be able to tell you what is happening with my work,where I am getting inspiration from and projects that I am starting.
